What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a skin condition that causes a scaly rash on oily areas of the body like the scalp and face.It causes itchy red patches and greasy white scales on your skin and scalp along with white or yellow crusty or powdery flakes on your scalp.It commonly affects the scalp, where it can also result in dandruff and face.

Its also called “dandruff” or “cradle cap”. Seborrheic dermatitis is a lifelong condition that appears, disappears with treatment, and flares up from time to time.

Does Seborrheic Dermatitis causes hair Loss?

Seborrheic Dermatitis doesn’t cause permanent hair loss.However, excessive scratching can resulting in some hair loss.

Causes Of Seborrheic Dermatitis

It can be due to the Malassezia, excess oil in the skin,depression,change of season or a problem in the immune system.

Seborrheic dermatitis may go away without treatment.Main treatments for seborrheic dermatitis are medicated shampoos, creams and lotions.

Antifungal gels or shampoos:

  • 2% ketoconazole shampoo: Use it only once a week
  • 1% ciclopirox (Loprox)

Corticosteroid Creams, lotions, shampoos or ointments:

  • Fluocinolone (Capex, Synalar),
  • Clobetasol (Clobex, Temovate)
  • Desonide (Desowen, Desonate)

Home Remedies For Seborrheic Dermatitis

Apply mineral oil, peanut oil or olive oil to your scalp. 

Wash your skin regularly

Don’t use skin and hair products that contain alcohol

A shampoo with 5% tea tree oil may be used on the affected area.

Don’t use styling products
